Get Rid of the Clutter

January is a popular month for going through the house to declutter. We make use of these brutally cold days to go through our closets and get rid of clothes and other items we no longer use. Doing so creates, among other things, a wide open visual space that somehow gives us a freeing feeling.

We can do the same thing for our spiritual life by getting rid of the clutter in our mind and giving God space to speak to us.

One way He speaks to us is through the Scriptures. Some people think that the Bible is just an old book, offering nothing relevant to our lives today. But that isn’t the case.

The Bible is the living Word of God. It was written by women and men who were inspired by God to write what they wrote. Yes, some of it includes ancient, unfamiliar customs. But the messages still pertain to us, wherever we are and whatever stage of life we’re in. If that weren’t the case, then we’d just have to read the Bible once and we’d know everything there is to know about God. However, God continues to speak to us through the Scriptures as we age, as our faith grows (or weakens), and as our life challenges change. He uses Scripture to demonstrate the immensity of His love for us. This is true even from those passages we’ve already heard countless times. He’ll give us new insights into how they relate to us now if we open our minds and hearts to what He wants to tell us. Get rid of the clutter – the chaos and noise around you – and take a few quiet moments with the Lord. Open the New Testament and read a few passages slowly until something catches your attention. Then, throughout your day, keep those words in mind and every once in a while ask the Lord what He wants you to learn from them. Write down the thoughts that come to you.

God also speaks to us through nature and through each other. ‘Declutter’ here by, say, turning off the radio while you’re driving and letting the magnificence of creation, including the glistening snow, remind you of the power of His love for you. Listen to His love expressed to you through your family and friends. Notice Him working through the people in your community. When you’re standing in line, offer friendly conversation to someone nearby, or use the time to ponder the Scripture passage you’ve read, instead of passing the time on your phone.

God speaks to us through Scripture, nature, and each other. Let’s clear out the noise and clutter that distracts us from noticing the many ways He’s showing His powerful love to us. Let’s give Him the time and space to speak to us.

“The word of God is living and effective, able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12

Open my heart, Lord, that I may hear You.

Store Up Treasures for Heaven

“It’s amazing, Molly. The love inside, you take it with you.” Sam (played by the late Patrick Swayze) said this to his beloved Molly (Demi Moore) near the end of the 1990 movie “Ghost.” In this powerful scene, Sam speaks these words to Molly while being summoned to heaven after he was murdered.

We all know the parable of the rich man who decided to build bigger barns to accommodate all his stuff. He thought that, since he had accumulated so much wealth, he could just relax for the rest of his life. God called him a ‘fool’ and reminded him that he could die that night and then all of his belongings would be given away (Luke 12:13-21). The unasked question became, “Without all your belongings, what will you have to show for yourself? What will you have left to give to Me?”

We know that love – how well we love God by loving our neighbor – is more important than everything else. The challenge with this, in our consumer society, is as much about how much time and energy we put into accumulating our stuff and then congratulating ourselves for becoming ‘successful,’ as the man in the parable did, as about how much we have. It’s about how we may look down on those who are less ‘successful’ than we are. It’s also about how we may put people into categories and treat them according to our judgment of them.

The only thing we take with us is the love within our hearts and the love we’ve shown to others – all others. We’ve heard that many times. So maybe we can look at it from a different angle.

I can ask myself:

-How much time do I give to God in prayer compared to the time I spend shopping? Maybe I can take a moment to thank God for the means to make that purchase.

-How much do I spend on others compared to the amount I spend on myself? Maybe every time I buy an article of clothing for myself I can give one away.

-It’s easy to converse with people who agree with my point of view. How willing am I to listen and try to understand someone who will vote differently from how I will – without condemning them for taking a different stand?

-How do I treat my coworker whose lifestyle is different from mine? Maybe I need to remind myself that God loves that person as much as He loves me.

If we say that love is what’s most important and proclaim that our material goods don’t really matter, then let’s take a moment to examine if what we proclaim is consistent with how we live – and make changes where we’re falling short.

“Thus it will be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God.” – Luke 12:21

“Lord, let nothing take up space in my heart that cannot be given to You.”

I Am With You

“Lord, do not cast me away from Your presence...Give me again the joy of Your help, and renew within me a steadfast spirit.” --Psalm 51:11, 12

Picture yourself sitting on a park bench, hunched over with your hands folded. Now imagine Christ sitting down next to you. You hear Him gently ask, “What’s on your mind?” Imagine looking up into His eyes and saying, “Stay here with me, Lord. I can’t do this on my own. Please help me. Let me feel joy again… What should I do?”

Listen to Christ answer your prayer: “Let Me help you. Become like a child in your faith and trust in Me. You don’t have to have all the answers because I have the answers. You don’t have to have it all figured out because I do. I see what you can’t see and I know what you don’t know.

“Every day, spend some time with Me in prayer, and listen. I will guide you. Stay focused on what you sense Me telling you. Take it one small step at a time, and you’ll have peace. You’ll feel joy again because you’re trying to stay close to Me.

“Yes, you have difficulties in this world. This world is only your temporary home. Look beyond your troubles and see what awaits you: heaven. Remember that I have prepared a place for you to be with Me forever in heaven. Until that time, I need you to continue what I started. I need you to bring My love to this fallen world in ways that only you can, and I have given you My Spirit to do it. The desire and power are already inside you.

"So trust Me, and let yourself be glad. I am always with you. Did you hear Me? I am with you! In your heart is My love; in your mind is My peace; in your soul is My Spirit. Don’t let Satan distract you from these; don’t listen to his lies of gloom and despair. I have carved you in the palm of My hand. Sit with Me a while, and listen to the words of love I whisper in your heart. Let your heart believe what I tell you, and celebrate.

“The Kingdom of God is within you. I love you. I am with you.”

“Thank You, Lord.”
