Lifting Each Other Up

If you’ve ever struggled to reach a goal, you might have discovered that joining a group with similar desires as your own helped you succeed. That’s because we tend to thrive when we’re supported by people who have the same goal that we do. For example, if we want to walk regularly, walking with a group might help us stick to a routine. The group makes the activity more enjoyable and encourages us to keep going when we want to stop. It also holds us accountable (“We missed you yesterday!”).

We benefit from our social and spiritual connections in a similar way that we benefit from a club such as a walking group. It’s important to nurture our relationships with the people who encourage and challenge us, and who allow us to do the same for them. We bring out the best in each other emotionally and spiritually. We strengthen each other for the hurdles that life presents to us. We pray for each other as we navigate health issues, work-related challenges, or family struggles. We help each other get through each particular difficulty in the way Christ wants us to, which is sometimes different from what our initial reaction might be.

Lifting each other up in this way fills us with the Love our souls crave. Convinced that we’re loved by God, we’re strengthened to offer this love to others. For example, if someone at work shares with you that they’re struggling with something, offer to pray for them. Tell them that you don’t even need to know the details; God knows the details. Tell them you’ll pray that the Lord will give them whatever it is that they need the most, including His peace during this difficult time. Doing so will remind them that they’re loved and that Christ is walking with them through their challenge.

The early apostles also supported each other as they traveled and spread the word of Christ’s resurrection. Take the case of Paul. He and Barnabas were preaching and healing people with the power of Christ, but there were some who didn’t accept them. At one point, Paul was stoned and left for dead. The other disciples gathered around him and, presumably, prayed for him and cared for him until he recovered fully (see Acts 14).

Empowered by the love of Christ, the early apostles prayed for each other and strengthened each other in their ministry. In a similar way, let’s lift each other up and encourage each other to face life’s difficulties with the strength Christ gives us.

“When the disciples gathered around him, he got up and entered the city.” – Acts 14:20

He Hears You

The small child grabs a toy off the shelf and puts it in the shopping cart. Dad takes it out and puts it back. The child doesn’t know why, and starts wailing. Maybe the toy isn’t age-appropriate, is too expensive, or will be given to him for his birthday. Dad could be showing his love by not giving him the toy. The child doesn’t know this; he knows only that he isn’t getting what he wants right now. His cries grow louder.

God hears all our prayers, whether they’re whispered or cried aloud in pain. Sometimes we get the answer we hoped for; sometimes we don’t. We might never know, in this lifetime, why God answers the way He does. Sometimes, we look back and thank Him for not giving in to our demands. Sometimes, we realize that our challenge prepared us for something better. When we pray, ‘Thy will be done,’ we trust that whatever God answers will bring about the greater good for ourselves and our loved ones.

It’s natural to ask, “Why?” when we’re suffering. It’s natural to feel discouraged when the problem doesn't go away.

“The same everlasting Father who cares for you today will care for you tomorrow and every day. Either he will shield you from suffering or give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace, then, and put aside all anxious thoughts and imaginings.” – Francis de Sales

Remember, God doesn’t give us difficulties and illness, but He does permit them. In His wisdom, He knows that challenges draw us closer to Him. We may be complacent while things are going smoothly and then, when we’re struggling, we call on Him for help. Struggles also tend to bring about our greatest growth: it’s not until after the storm has passed that we see how much we’ve learned by going through it. This experience might help us later. Also, others’ challenges often bring out our most generous selves: We might be the answer to their prayers.

Imagine our Lord saying to you:

You feel anxious and are worried about many things. I hear you and see you. I know what that feels like because I, too, felt agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

I know what it feels like to be frustrated and discouraged because I felt that when my apostles didn’t understand what I was trying to teach them.

I hear you. I am with you. Come to Me and open your heart to what I want to tell you.

Put your worries on My cross. Let Me share your burden, and then your suffering will have purpose. Let Me use it for a greater good: your salvation and the salvation of the world.

Every prayer you utter, I hear and I answer. Listen in your heart for the answer I’m giving you.

I love you.

“Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people… Listen from your heavenly dwelling...” – 1 Kings 8:30

“Lord, I trust in You.”

See the Blessings

Our troubles are real: Flat tires, sick kids, broken appliances, and illness, just to name a few. Even technology, which theoretically makes our lives easier, often causes us stress. Sometimes, our problems seem to pile up until we feel buried in an avalanche of headaches.

How do we respond?

One way is to gripe about our situation to all who will listen. We carry a chip of anger and resentment on our shoulder and we’ll spew our problems onto anyone and everyone we encounter. (I’ve said this before, and it’s worth repeating: This is different from the importance of seeking a trusted friend or a licensed therapist who can listen to our struggles, help us find healthy ways to release our stress, and guide us toward a possible solution.)

Another option is to think back to other challenges we’ve faced in the past and recognize how we managed to get through them. Then, we stop the chaos in our minds, take a deep breath, and ask our Lord to help us carry these new burdens.

Imagine Him saying to you now:

Think back to that one major struggle you had. Think back to how you begged Me to resolve it in a particular way. Over time, you did get My answer to your prayer, even though maybe it wasn’t the answer you had expected. I was with you in all of it.

Think back to other difficulties you’ve had and how you found relief from unlikely sources: An acquaintance knew of a medical team that specialized in your particular illness. A stranger stopped to help you change your tire. A friend called out of the blue to relieve you of your stress for a while. People stepped in to help just when you needed it. You got an idea of how to resolve the computer issue. You found a YouTube video that showed you how to repair the broken appliance instead of buying a new one.

All of these were My blessings. Maybe you didn’t get the miracle you wanted. Instead, the miracle may be the peace you’ve found even in the midst of the struggle. You asked Me for help, and I gave you My peace.

Trust Me. Trust My wisdom: I ordered the seasons, didn’t I? The seasons change, bringing relief from the burdens of the previous season’s weather. You are precious to Me. I’ve brought relief to you during other trying times; I’ll help you through this one, too.

“Thank You, Lord, for helping me to see Your presence in the midst of my difficulties.”

“The Lord has done marvels for us.” – Psalm 126:3

Gratitude Lightens Our Burdens

They say that if we tossed our troubles onto a pile with our neighbors’ problems and then had the opportunity to take whatever we wanted, we would all choose to take back our own struggles over those of our neighbors. Maybe that’s because, while our challenges are burdensome, they are also familiar to us.

Our sufferings are real, and life seems full of them. Our current problem may be so oppressive that it’s like a hand being held right in front of our eyes, blocking our view of everything else. If we mentally step aside for a moment, though, and move away from that blocked view, we would see that, even with this burden, we still can find much to be grateful for. This gratitude helps us handle our challenges.

We can be grateful for our magnificent bodies, with the intricate workings of cells, organs, and systems that function without any effort from us! Even when we’re faced with illness or injury, while we’re taking steps to help our body heal or adapt we can still gratefully think, feel, do, and live!

You are not a mere product of science or chance! Everything about you was deliberately created by God. You have skills and talents. You may not think yours are anything special, but your gifts are not exactly the same as anyone else’s, and your unique personality shapes how you use them.

Look outside yourself and consider with gratitude your family, friends, and acquaintances. They are gifts for you, and you are gifts for them! Think of all the happy memories you’ve created together, challenges you’ve conquered together, things you’ve learned from each other, and how you’ve made life sweeter for each other just by being yourselves.

Look with gratitude at your home, your clothes, and your possessions. Look with awe at the natural world around you. From the food that grows to the stars that capture our imagination, God created all of it for us to enjoy, marvel at, and learn from.

Finally, consider God’s intangible gifts like laughter that eased your pain; strength that got you through a tough challenge; and answers to your prayers, even when you didn’t get the answer you’d hoped for. You’re grateful for all of it because you know that God does everything out of His love for you. Your gratitude reassures you that He will help you with your current challenge, too.

How do we show our appreciation for all God has done for us?  We take care of our bodies the best we can. We care for each other and cherish our time together. We share our time, talents, and possessions. We use the blessings of nature responsibly.

We consider the wonders of all His gifts and pray from the heart: ‘‘Thanks.”

“How shall I make a return to the Lord for all the good He has done for me?”

– Psalm 116:12

“Lord, open my eyes to fully appreciate all that You’ve done for me.”

Suffering and Miracles

Our friend Len shouldn’t be alive today. An active man now at age 70, he’ll tell you that 45 years ago he had a near-death experience, and 15 years ago was told he had maybe 18 months to live. Len was in so much pain that he asked God to let him die. That’s when someone suggested he see an MD in Cleveland with a reputation for treating -- and healing -- terminal cases like his. Len met with this physician, Dr. Issam Nemeh; what happened next shocked and baffled his doctors.

The Bible is full of stories of people being cured of physical and mental ailments. Many, like the blind man Bartimaeus, were persistent in asking Jesus to heal them (see Mark 10:46-52). Even today, we hear of people being healed miraculously, outside of medical explanation. We may wonder why God allows suffering in the first place, and why some people recover and not others, with medicine or without.

One way to look at this is to ask, “Why do athletes endure brutal practice sessions?” They suffer to reach their goal: winning. Yet not everyone wins, even if they practice.

Our ultimate goal isn’t to live on earth forever. Our ‘winning’ is living in perfect Love, which is eternal life with God. Our earthly sufferings can help us reach that goal. Yes, illness and other difficulties cause us great pain and distress. When we ask God to take away our pain or use it for some kind of good, or when we ask Him for the grace and wisdom to get through a particular hardship, these humble prayers acknowledge His power and move us toward Him. Whether or not we’re healed, or if our prayer is answered in a way different from what we had hoped, we have brought ourselves closer to God. When others care for us in our illness, or support us in our difficulties, they become more like Him; they show us His love. All of this can bring all of us closer to Him. That’s our goal.

Our sufferings can help us know that God is with us always; He is alive, loving, and powerful.

Len was healed immediately. Dr. Nemeh stresses that it’s God, not him, Who does the healing.  You can listen to Len and Dr. Nemeh tell their story to the radio personality you may know as ‘Trapper Jack’ on this link:

Give Yourself a Break

Parents know the value of giving their child a ‘time out’ when the child is overwhelmed. Jesus shows that it’s important for us to take breaks, too.

In Matthew chapter 14, Jesus learns that Herod has beheaded John the Baptist. Jesus wants to be alone to grieve but the people find out where He is:  “As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick” (Matthew 14:13-14).

And then, after preaching and healing all day, Jesus miraculously feeds thousands of people with only a few loaves of bread and a couple fish. The next verses tell us about His need for a ‘time out’:  “Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone” (Matthew 14:22-23).

“Jesus insisted...” He made them go without Him; He wanted to be alone. He likely felt drained, and ached to talk to the Father about John’s death. He had wanted to get away since He first heard about John and knew this was a good time to go.

“Jesus insisted…”  Jesus undoubtedly wanted to thank His Father for giving Him the power and stamina to preach, heal, and feed the multitudes. He also needed to let the Father ‘recharge’ Him and had to be by Himself for this to happen.

“Jesus insisted…” Jesus knew He needed a break and insisted on taking it. We, too, have to make it a priority to take care of ourselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. That’s not being selfish; that’s preserving the precious YOU God created! It’s important to ‘get away’ to God when you’re exhausted or hurting or even celebrating. Look for – or create -- little breaks in your day to turn to Him. Talk to Him about whatever’s on your mind and pay attention to what thoughts come back to you. Stop to thank Him for loving you. ‘Getting away’ to God is only impossible if you decide that it is. If you have small children, maybe the only time you have by yourself is while brushing your teeth. Stop brushing a moment, thank God for those children, and let Him refresh you -- for them.

God loves you! Insist on ‘getting away’ to Him. Let Him recharge you.

“Be still, and know that I am God.” --Psalm 46:10

God Doesn't Give Up

Imagine driving across the country on a highway with no roadblocks, no detours, and even no attractive exits along the way. Imagine nothing but a straight path, free of challenges and anything that would distract you from reaching your destination.

Sometimes we want life to be like that: we want God to make our journey easy. He knows better than we do, though, and in His wisdom He lets us choose which routes to follow and which exits to take. Over the past 10, 30 or 50 years you probably chose routes that brought you closer to Him and maybe took exits that led you far away from Him. You may even be lost right now. No matter where you are, God sees your potential. He invites you to turn toward Him and let Him pour His grace on you. He will never give up on you because He knows you’re still on your journey.

Imagine what would have happened if Jesus had said to Zacchaeus, “You’re a liar and a cheat. I doubt anyone would hire you, but go get a decent job and then come back. Maybe I’ll let you hang out with Me.” Instead, Jesus first loved him. He saw the longing in his heart and offered him an opportunity to follow Him. The love and peace that radiated from Jesus caused Zacchaeus to quit his job on the spot, take Jesus up on His invitation, and offer to pay back fourfold anyone he had cheated. Jesus loved him despite his dishonest work and then Zacchaeus turned his life around.

God does the same with us. He doesn’t say, “Get your act together and then I’ll love you.” Instead, He loves us first. He loves us now. He knows we have the potential to become more like Him and never gives up on us. He gives us opportunities to turn toward Him through our circumstances, the people we encounter, and the sacraments. He continually invites us to follow His way of gentleness, kindness, compassion, and patience which will bring us the joy we so desperately long for.

God offers His love and mercy to us no matter where we are. In turn, we’re called to offer these to our ‘travel companions’ and invite them to follow Him. We don’t know all the roadblocks they’ve encountered, and maybe they’ve taken exits we’re unfamiliar with. That’s not our business. What matters is that we’re all on this journey together and, as He won’t give up on us, we can’t give up on each other. Let’s ask God to guide all of us on our journey and lead us closer to Him.

“Lord, thank You for not giving up on me.”

Reasons to Hope

There’s more to love about autumn than the glowing Harvest Moon and maple leaves painting the landscape with reds and yellows. Autumn’s charm lies in its unique aura, a combination of contentment with the present, optimism for the future, and nostalgia for the past. We say goodbye to another short summer; we enjoy just-picked tomatoes and sweet corn; and we plant bulbs for next spring, and remember the ‘new beginning’ feeling with another school year starting. This looking-back-and-looking-ahead may stir in us some wonder about what’s in store for us as we near the end of another calendar year. The prophet Jeremiah reminds us that our future is in God’s hands:

“I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future filled with hope.” –Jeremiah 29:11

Maybe you’re an educator or a student and you’ve embarked on a new school year. God has plans for you to flourish. Take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves!

Maybe you’re looking for work or have recently changed jobs. God has plans for you to succeed with the particular talents He’s given you.

Maybe you’re dealing with health challenges, relationship difficulties, or some other burden. God has plans for you: These challenges may lead you to greater strength, insight, or holiness. Ask Him to wrap His peace around you and help you carry this cross.

Maybe nothing significant has changed for you recently and you’re left wondering if there’s anything good coming out of this monotony. God has plans for you, too. He’s your constant companion in your routine; your good work today will reap rewards later.

The Lord wants us to trust Him and His plans. Imagine Him saying to you, ‘You will thrive and prosper, and live in peace, if you strive to follow Me. You will work and you will speak, and some people will appreciate you and listen to you, and others will not. This is how it was with the prophets and with Me, so why should it be any different with you? Continue in your work. Do not lose heart. Do not get discouraged by any of your challenges. Do not abandon your work or give up just because you don’t see results. I am working in hearts; I am working where you cannot see. If you give up, then you give up on Me and I won’t be able to accomplish what I mean to accomplish through you. Persistence and cheerfulness will pay off.’

Our God, Who ordered the seasons of nature, has great plans for you! YOU are precious to Him!

“Lord, I trust that my life has purpose. Because of You, I will look ahead with hope.”
